Grounds of Marriage Nullity
Consent makes marriage – As stated in canon law:
Marriage is brought about through the consent of the parties, legitimately manifested between persons who are capable according to law of giving consent; no human power can replace this consent.
The Catholic church believes that consent makes marriage – and if the consent was flawed from the very beginning, then a marriage never really took place. If it is discovered that the consent was flawed from the very beginning, then the marriage can be declared invalid in the eyes of the Catholic Church.
Many people however, just want to go on with their lives and continue to practice their Catholic faith – and the annulment process is a very difficult one, can be very invasive, and overwhelming. Sometimes it can help bring closure and healing to some, and to others it can only bring heart ache.
If any of you reading this have applied for a church annulment, please fill out the church annulment survey regarding your annulment experience, in hopes that tribunals can somehow improve its pastoral practice. There is little that tribunals can do to change the law, but perhaps your responses can help with its pastoral practice.
